Dear Lord, the fog outside my window here in Baguio feels exactly like what is happening inside my head. I have been sitting in the dark for three nights now, just staring at the wall, wondering if You can even see me through this thick cloud of numbness. I keep trying to pray, but the words just get stuck in my throat like the cold air that bites when I step out to the balcony. Everyone tells me to just 'be positive' or to visit the Burnham Park and breathe, but how can I breathe when my chest feels like it is being crushed by a weight I cannot name?
I have done everything right, po. I worked hard to support my younger siblings, I finished my degree, and I have tried to be the son Tatay would be proud of. But now, even the thought of getting out of bed feels like climbing a mountain. Where are You when the silence becomes this loud? Have You forgotten the plans You supposedly had for me, or was I just never part of the bigger picture to begin with?
I am so tired of performing, of smiling for the relatives during Sunday lunch, and of saying 'opo' when deep down I want to scream because I feel completely empty. What do I do now when I cannot even find the strength to believe that tomorrow will be better? I just need to know if You are still here, or if I am truly doing this alone.
Your broken son, Aris
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Aris, thank you for being so incredibly brave with your words. It takes immense strength to admit that the light feels dim, and I want you to know that your honesty is not a sign of weak faith—it is a sign of a heart that is still reaching out, even in the dark.
You asked where God is in the silence. In Psalm 34:18, it is written, 'The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.' He is not offended by your exhaustion or your questions. When you feel that weight on your chest, imagine Him sitting right there in the cold room with you, not demanding you to 'be positive,' but simply holding space for your grief.
You do not have to carry the weight of being the 'perfect son' today. Just breathe, one moment at a time. You are seen, you are known, and you are deeply loved, even in the moments when you cannot feel it.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Lord, thank You for holding Aris even when he feels like he is falling. I pray that You would gently lift the fog from his mind and remind his heart that he is never alone. Give him the rest he desperately needs, and help him to feel the warmth of Your presence in the quietest, coldest moments of his day. Grant him the courage to keep breathing until the light returns. In Jesus name, Amen.
