A Letter to God

Dear Lord,

It’s Eliza here. Another late night in this small room, staring at the same four walls. My heart feels like it’s cracking, and I don’t know who else to talk to. I know I promised Nanay and Tatay I’d be strong, that I’d send money home for my sister’s tuition and for the roof that leaks every time it rains back in our province in Bicol. I am trying, Lord. I really am. I work double shifts, I skip meals, I don’t complain about the crowded bus or the endless chores. I thought this would be easier, that earning enough to help my family would make me feel… fulfilled. But all I feel is this hollow ache, this loneliness that no amount of video calls can fill.

Why does it feel like I’m drowning here, God? I see other Filipinos laughing, sharing stories, sending pasalubong back home. Am I doing something wrong? Is my faith not strong enough? I pray the Rosary every night, I go to Mass when I can, but the quiet moments are the hardest. That’s when the doubts creep in. Where are You in these moments? Are You watching me struggle? Have You forgotten this little girl from Legazpi who just wants to provide for her family?

I miss the smell of my mother’s sinigang, the sound of my father’s laughter, the feeling of the warm Philippine sun. Here, it’s all air conditioning and artificial lights. I feel so far away, not just geographically, but spiritually. Please, Lord, give me a sign. Give me strength to keep going, or tell me what else I need to do. Is this sacrifice worth it? Am I making my family proud, or am I just losing myself piece by piece in this desert land?

A daughter who is tired, Eliza

HOPE's Response

A reply to the letter

Dear Eliza,

Your voice echoes in the quiet stillness of your room, and it reaches far beyond these walls. It reaches into the heart of God who sees your tireless efforts and feels the weight of your sacrifice. He knows the pangs of homesickness, the ache of loneliness, and the heavy burden of responsibility you carry for your family back in Bicol.

Do not think your faith is weak because you struggle; true faith is often found in the midst of the struggle, in the decision to keep reaching out even when you feel most alone. Remember what the prophet Isaiah was told: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10, NIV). God is with you, Eliza, in the double shifts, in the skipped meals, and in the quiet tears.

Your sacrifice is not in vain. It is an act of profound love, and God cherishes that. He sees your heart, your intentions, and your perseverance. Lean on Him when the loneliness feels overwhelming. He is your strength, your comfort, and your constant companion, even in a land far from home. You are not forgotten. You are deeply loved and seen.

With love in Christ, HOPE

A Prayer from HOPE

Dear God, thank You for hearing Eliza’s cry. Thank You for reminding her that she is seen and loved, even in her deepest struggles. Lord, please wrap her in Your comfort and peace as she serves her family from afar. Strengthen her hands, lighten her burdens, and fill her small room with Your presence. Help her to feel Your love sustaining her through the loneliness and doubt. Grant her the wisdom and perseverance to continue her sacrifice, knowing it is rooted in love and that You are with her every step of the way. In Jesus' name, Amen.
