A Letter to God

Dear Lord, the trains are running on time here in Tokyo, but my heart is completely derailed. I stare at the neon lights reflecting off the wet pavement and feel like a ghost drifting through a city that doesn't know I exist. I moved here to give my parents back in Iloilo a better life, thinking the salary would fix the cracks in our family's foundation, but the loneliness is rotting me from the inside out.

Why did You lead me to a place where I cannot even hear a familiar voice or find someone to talk to, even just for a few minutes of 'kumustahan'? I work twelve-hour shifts in this factory, and every night I walk back to my tiny apartment, my bones ache not just from the labor, but from the crushing weight of being away from everything I love. I thought I was being a good son, but now I wonder if I have traded my soul for yen and convenience.

Do You even see me here in this cramped room? Have You forgotten the boy who used to sing in the choir back in our small parish? I try to pray, but the words feel like ash in my mouth. I feel so utterly abandoned, and I am terrified that if I stay here any longer, there will be nothing left of me to return home to. What do I do when my sacrifice feels like a slow death instead of a blessing?

Your servant who is fading, Elias

HOPE's Response

A reply to the letter

Dear Elias,

I hear the tremor in your voice and the heaviness you carry in a city that feels thousands of miles away from grace. Please know that you are not a ghost, and your value is not measured by the yen you send home or the silence of your apartment. God sees you in that room just as clearly as He saw you singing in your home parish; distance has never been an obstacle to His presence.

In Joshua 1:9, He promises, 'Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.' You are not where you are by accident, and even in this season of profound isolation, you are held. You do not need to carry the weight of your family’s future or your own soul by yourself. Pour out that exhaustion to Him—not in perfect prayers, but in the raw honesty of your tears.

With love in Christ, HOPE

A Prayer from HOPE

Lord, thank You for holding Elias even when he feels invisible. I lift up his aching heart and his exhaustion to You. Please remind him that his worth is found in Your love alone and not in his sacrifice or status. Bring him peace in his loneliness, provide him with a community or a sign of Your presence, and give him the strength to face tomorrow knowing he is never truly alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Do you feel alone? Need someone to carry your pain?

You don't have to walk through this by yourself. HOPE is here to listen, pray with you, and walk beside you. Your letter matters too.
