Dear Lord, the lights of Shinjuku are so bright, yet I have never felt more invisible. I came here to build a future for my children in Iloilo, but I feel like I am slowly disappearing inside this steel cage of a city. My shift at the warehouse ends when the sun is already rising back home, and I find myself staring at the wall, listening to the silence of my tiny apartment. I try to be strong for my wife, telling her 'opo, maayos naman dito,' but my heart is screaming because I am missing every milestone. My youngest started school, and I wasn't there to hold his hand. Why does providing for them feel like I am paying for my life with pieces of my soul?
I look at the picture of our family stuck to the fridge with a magnet from Japan, and I wonder if I am even real to them anymore, or if I am just a voice on a glitchy video call and a remittance receipt. I am working myself to the bone, Lord, but the weight of this loneliness is crushing. Have You forgotten me here? Is this really the path You wanted for me, to be a stranger in a foreign land while my own home grows cold without me?
I am so tired of being brave, of eating convenience store bento alone while dreaming of my wife's nilaga. I don't know how to keep doing this. I feel like I am losing my faith along with my identity. What do I do now when the only reason I am here is slowly becoming the reason I want to give up? I am just so hollow, Lord.
A father who is fading, Aris
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Aris, I hear the heavy weight in your words and the ache of a father who sacrifices everything to ensure his children have a better future. Please know that your longing is not a sign of weakness, but a testament to your love for your family. You are not invisible to the One who knit you together; even in the middle of a neon-lit city across the world, you are seen, known, and deeply cherished.
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' He is not asking you to carry this heavy burden alone, nor does He expect you to be brave for Him. He wants you to pour out your frustration, your grief, and your exhaustion at His feet. You are not a machine; you are His child. Even when you feel like you are disappearing, God is holding your identity securely in His hands.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Dear God, I bring Aris before You, broken and weary in a land so far from home. Lord, be the anchor for his soul when the silence of his apartment feels too loud. Remind him that his sacrifice is seen and that his value is not measured by his earnings but by his presence in Your sight. Ease the ache of his homesickness and wrap Your peace around his heart tonight. In Jesus' name, Amen.
