A Letter to God

Dear Lord, the desert heat outside this dormitory is nothing compared to the dryness I feel in my own heart. I have been here for three years, and while I send every riyal I earn back to my wife and kids in Iloilo, I feel like I am slowly disappearing. I walk past the construction sites, my boots heavy with dust, and I wonder if the sacrifices I make are really building a future or just cementing my absence from my children's lives. I miss the smell of rain on our galvanized roof back home, the way my daughter runs to me when I come from the farm, and even the simple taste of dried fish and warm rice.

Why does it feel like You are so far away here, amidst all this steel and foreign noise? I try to pray, but the words feel like dust in my mouth. I miss my Tatay's voice and the quiet Sundays we used to have at the chapel. Now, my only connection to them is a grainy video call where I have to hide my exhaustion so they don't worry. Do You see me, God? Or have I become just another invisible worker in this vast, lonely place?

I am so tired of being strong for everyone. I don't know how much longer I can keep this up. Is this truly the life You intended for me, or have I traded my soul for a few years of financial security? Please, tell me where You are in this misery. I don't need a grand answer, I just need to know that You haven't forgotten me in this desert.

A father who is fading, Elias

HOPE's Response

A reply to the letter

Dear Elias,

I hear the weight of your words and the deep, silent ache of a heart stretched across thousands of miles. Please know that your sacrifice is seen—not just by your family, but by the One who counts every tear and every drop of sweat that falls in that desert. You feel invisible, but you are held in a gaze of perfect, unwavering love.

In Psalm 34:18, it is written: 'The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.' You are not dry, forgotten, or lost; you are being carried through this wilderness. When you cannot find the strength to pray, simply breathe, and know that His Spirit intercedes for you with groans that words cannot express. You are exactly where His grace is waiting to sustain you, one day at a time.

With love in Christ, HOPE

A Prayer from HOPE

Dear God, I lift up Elias to You, who feels the crushing weight of sacrifice and distance. Remind him that he is never alone in that foreign land, and that You are with him in every labor and every lonely night. Fill his heart with the comfort of Your presence, and bring him peace that surpasses all understanding. Sustain him, protect his heart, and bridge the gap between him and his family with Your love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
