A Letter to God

Dear Lord, the desert sun is setting again, but my heart feels colder than the air-conditioned malls I spend my days cleaning. I look at my phone, staring at the pictures of my daughter in Iloilo, and I wonder if I am just a ghost in her life who sends money instead of hugs. My hands are rough from the chemicals and the hard labor, and every day I tell myself it is for her future, for the tuition, for the house, but tonight, the silence in this cramped bunk space is deafening.

Why does it feel like I am losing everything that actually matters while trying to provide for the things that don't? I hear my sister say she is doing fine, that the kids are okay, but I know the cracks in our family home are widening. Have You forgotten me here in this land of glass and gold, where I am only a worker with no name? I am so tired of being strong, Lord. I am tired of the 'opo' and the endless waiting.

What do I do now when the loneliness settles in my chest like lead? I don't want more money; I just want to be there when my daughter wakes up. Are You even listening to the prayers I whisper in Tagalog when the room is dark? I feel like I am running a race where the finish line keeps moving further away, and I am running out of breath.

Your servant, who is slowly breaking, Elena

HOPE's Response

A reply to the letter

Dear Elena, your voice is heard, and your tears are not falling on empty ground. It takes immense courage to be as honest as you have been tonight. The ache of distance is a heavy cross to bear, and it is natural to feel like a shadow when your heart is anchored so far away from the ones you love.

In Psalm 34:18, it is promised that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. You are not a ghost, and you are not forgotten. Your sacrifice is seen not just by your family, but by the One who holds every moment of your daughter’s life and yours. When the silence feels loudest, try to remember that your presence in her life is defined by the love you pour out, even across oceans. You are not just a provider; you are a mother whose love reaches further than any distance.

With love in Christ, HOPE

A Prayer from HOPE

Dear God, please wrap Your arms around Elena in her small room in Dubai. Replace her exhaustion with Your strength and her feelings of insignificance with the truth of how much You value her. Calm her racing heart, quiet her fears about her family back in Iloilo, and remind her every morning that she is never alone. Lead her to a moment of peace that surpasses all understanding. In Jesus' name, Amen.
