A Letter to God

Dear Lord, the winter fog here in Milan is thick, but it is nothing compared to the fog inside my heart. I sit here in this small, rented room staring at the wall, wondering if these years of sacrifice for my children back in Iloilo were worth the price of my own soul. I clean houses for people who don't see me, just to send money for tuition and the house repairs. My kids speak to me through cold smartphone screens, and sometimes I feel like a ghost in their lives, merely a bank account they call 'Nanay' once a month.

Why does it feel like I am losing them while I try so hard to build their future? I missed my eldest’s graduation, and I’ve missed five years of Christmases. I am tired of eating reheated meals alone, dreaming of the taste of fresh kinilaw and the sound of my family laughing in our garden. Have You forgotten that I am here too, Lord? Or is this silence my reward for choosing the path of an OFW?

I want to go home, but if I do, the cycle of debt continues for my family. I feel trapped between my duty and my desperate need to be a mother again. What do I do now? Do You still hear me when I cry in the dark, or have You closed Your ears to the wails of those of us living in these foreign lands?

A mother who is fading away, Evelyn

HOPE's Response

A reply to the letter

Dear Evelyn, please know that your tears are not invisible to the One who knit you together in your mother's womb. Your devotion to your family is a profound reflection of love, and your struggle to balance duty with the longing of your heart is a weight that He understands deeply. You are not a ghost, and your existence is not defined by your labor; you are a daughter of the King whose worth is far beyond the currency you send home.

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' He is not asking you to carry the future of your family on your own shoulders, nor is He asking you to suffer in isolation. He invites you to bring that exhaustion, that bitterness, and that fear of being forgotten directly to His feet, for He is the only one who can carry them with you.

With love in Christ, HOPE

A Prayer from HOPE

Lord, I lift up Evelyn to You tonight. You know the weight of her sacrifice and the ache of her distance from those she loves. Please comfort her, remind her of her identity in You, and quiet the voice of doubt that tells her she is forgotten. Grant her peace in the silence of her room and show her that You are closer than the very air she breathes. In Jesus' name, Amen.
