Dear Lord, the desert heat outside my window feels exactly like the dryness in my soul. I am three years into this contract in Dubai, and while I send money home to Tarlac every month, I feel like I am slowly disappearing. I thought working here would be the answer to our debts, but instead, it has only bought me a deeper kind of loneliness. My children are growing up through WhatsApp video calls, and I miss the way they smell like talcum powder and fresh air. Why does the path to providing for them feel like a slow surrender of my own life?
I find myself staring at the wall of my flat, asking if You even hear me over the hum of the air conditioner. Did I make the wrong choice? I left my parents, my peace, and the rolling rice fields of Tarlac for these glass towers that feel like a cage. Sometimes I wonder if You have forgotten me here, or if You think my sacrifice is worth the brokenness I feel every night when I lie down in this bunk bed. Everything is 'fine' when I talk to my family, but inside, I am screaming for an exit.
What do I do now, God? I am tired of being the 'hero' for everyone back home. I want to be a father and a son again, not just a remittance machine. Do You see me, or am I just another face in the crowd of this desert city? Please, I need to know that You are in this room with me, because right now, all I feel is the silence of a God who seems very far away.
A weary father, Elias
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elias, your honesty before God is not a sign of failure; it is the first step toward genuine restoration. He is not a distant taskmaster who only cares about the provision you send; He is a Father who cares deeply for the man providing it. Your sacrifice is seen, and your exhaustion is understood by the One who walked the path of suffering and rejection Himself.
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' This rest is not just for your body; it is for your soul that feels like it is disappearing. You do not have to carry the weight of being the 'hero' alone. You can bring your bitterness, your fear, and your longing to Him. He is the God of the desert, and He is present in the silence of your room, waiting for you to stop performing and simply start being present with Him.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Heavenly Father, I bring Elias to You in the center of his struggle. Please wrap Your arms around him in that quiet room in Dubai. Remove the weight of expectation that crushes his spirit and replace it with the assurance of Your presence. Remind him that he is Your child first, before he is a provider, a father, or an OFW. Give him the peace that surpasses all understanding, and help him to know that he is never alone in his exile. In Jesus' name, Amen.
