Dear Lord, the desert heat outside my window feels nothing compared to the freezing cold I feel in my chest. It has been three years since I left my family in Bacolod, and tonight, the silence in this cramped bunk space is deafening. I promised my children that I would only be gone for two years, but the debts keep piling up back home, and my salary barely covers the basic needs. I am tired, Lord. I am so tired of smiling on video calls while my heart is breaking into pieces.
Why does it feel like You are so far away from this room? I see my coworkers finding comfort in their own ways, but I feel like I am just drifting in this sea of sand. Have You forgotten the sacrifices I make for my family? Is this all there is to life—sending money, missing every birthday, and growing old in a land that does not know my name? Sometimes I look at the screen of my phone and wonder if my kids are even growing up to know who I am anymore.
I want to come home, but I am terrified that if I leave, everything will crumble. I feel trapped between the duty I owe my family and the soul-crushing loneliness that is consuming me bit by bit. Please, just tell me if this is worth it. Please, tell me You are still here, because right now, I cannot feel Your presence at all. I am lost, and I don't know how to keep going for another day.
A father who is running on empty, Elias
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elias,
I hear the weight of your burden, and I want you to know that your tears are seen. The exhaustion you feel is not a sign of failure; it is the human reflection of the immense love you have for your family. You are doing a hard thing, and it is okay to admit that you are not okay. You are not a machine; you are a beloved son, and your value is not defined by the remittances you send or the hours you work, but by who you are in His eyes.
You ask if He has forgotten you, but Scripture reminds us in Isaiah 49:15-16, 'Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.' You are never out of His reach, even in the middle of a desert thousands of miles from Bacolod. He is in the silence of that room, holding the pieces of your heart that you feel are slipping away.
Take a breath, Elias. You do not have to carry the future today—only this moment. He is enough to sustain you when your own strength fails, and His grace is sufficient even in the most isolating corners of the world.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Dear God, I come before You with a heavy, weary heart. You know the miles between me and my loved ones and the ache of this loneliness. Please remind me that I am not alone, and help me to trust in Your plan when everything feels uncertain. Give me the strength to endure today and the peace to rest tonight. Comfort my family back home and keep them safe in Your embrace until we are together again. I surrender my fears and my fatigue to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
