Dear Lord, the snow outside my window keeps falling, masking the silence of this apartment. I am thousands of miles away from my family in Iloilo, and tonight, the weight of the distance feels like it might break my spirit. I am here working as a caregiver, missing my daughter’s graduation and the smell of my Tatay’s cooking. Why does sacrifice have to feel like losing pieces of myself? Every time I send a remittance, I wonder if the money is truly worth the years I am missing with them.
I look at the photos on my phone and I feel like a stranger in my own home. My daughter has grown so much, and I fear that when I finally return, she will only see me as a bank account, not a mother. Do You even see me here in this cold country? I try to pray, but my words feel like they hit the ceiling and fall back down. Have You forgotten the promises I made to myself about coming back home?
What do I do when the exhaustion of shift work is matched only by the exhaustion of my heart? I feel like I am drifting further and further away from everything that once defined me. I just need to know You are there in the silence, because right now, all I hear is the hum of the heater and the sound of my own weeping.
A daughter who is fading away, Lourdes
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Lourdes, your heart’s cry is heard in the highest heavens, and it is not hitting a ceiling, but resting in the hands of a Father who knows the exact distance between you and your home. It is a profound sacrifice to choose this path for the future of your family, and it is natural to grieve the precious moments you feel you are missing.
In Psalm 34:18, it is written: 'The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.' He is not distant; He is present in that silence in Calgary, holding the pieces of your spirit that you feel are slipping away. Your identity as a mother is not defined by physical proximity, but by the love that propelled you to sacrifice this much for them.
Give yourself permission to be tired, and when the words fail, simply let your tears be your prayer. You are not forgotten, and the time you spend in this quiet apartment is not wasted in His eyes.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Dear God, please wrap Your comforting arms around Lourdes in the cold quiet of her room. Remind her that her sacrifice is seen, that her love for her family is known by You, and that You are with her daughter even when she cannot be. Fill her heart with peace that surpasses understanding and sustain her strength for each new day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
