Dear Lord, I am writing this while the rest of the boarding house is asleep. My shift at the factory ended hours ago, but my mind is still racing with thoughts of home and the heavy silence of this room. The neon lights outside my window in Tokyo are so bright, yet I have never felt more in the dark. I came here to give my family a better life, but every day feels like I am losing pieces of who I am just to keep the bank account growing back in Iloilo.
Why does this sacrifice have to feel like a slow death? My Tatay is getting older, and I am missing every birthday and every milestone. Is this truly the path You wanted for me, or did I mistake my own ambition for Your calling? I look at the pictures on my phone of my children, and I feel like a ghost, a voice on a video call who is slowly becoming a stranger to them. I feel like I am failing them by being away, even though I am working so hard to provide.
I am so tired of the loneliness, Lord. I walk through these clean, cold streets, and there is no one who knows the real me, no one to share a simple merienda with. Have You forgotten me in this foreign land? I am constantly crying out for a sign, a whisper, anything to tell me that this struggle has meaning. I don’t know how much longer I can keep doing this.
Your son who is fading away, Aris
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Aris,
It is truly heartbreaking to hear the heaviness you are carrying tonight. Please know that your tears are not unnoticed; God sees the sacrifice you are making, not just for your family's future, but the daily surrender of your heart in a land that feels so distant. You are not a ghost, and you are certainly not forgotten. Even in the brightest lights of Tokyo, the shadow of the Almighty is over you.
In Deuteronomy 31:8, the Lord promises, "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." You are asking if He has forgotten you, but He is the very One who is sustaining your breath in that room while you sleep. Your worth is not defined by the distance between you and your family, nor by your productivity in the factory. You are deeply loved for exactly who you are, Aris.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Dear God, thank You for holding Aris in the palm of Your hand, even when he feels like he is a thousand miles away from everything he knows. Please replace his loneliness with Your presence, and give him the strength to face tomorrow. Soften his heart to hear Your voice, and remind him that he is never truly alone because You are the Father who never abandons His children. We surrender his exhaustion and his fears to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
