Dear God, the silence in this concrete room in Riyadh is louder than the busiest streets of Manila. I have been here for three years, working as a warehouse supervisor, sending every riyal I earn back to my family in Samar, but I feel like I am just ghost-walking through life. My children are growing up through WhatsApp video calls, and I am missing every milestone—every school play, every first heartbreak, every birthday celebration. I am here for their future, but I am losing the very present they need me to be part of.
Why does the sacrifice have to feel like a slow death? I see my reflection in the dark glass at night and I do not recognize the man staring back. Have You forgotten that I am a father first, not just a remittance machine? I pray for the day I can finally go home, for a balikbayan box that is actually me coming home instead of just clothes and chocolates. But every day, the contract gets extended, and the visa renewal feels like another chain.
What do I do now when the loneliness settles into my bones like the desert cold? I try to pray, but the words feel empty, trapped under this foreign ceiling. Do You even hear me over the cries of millions of others like me who are so far from home? I am exhausted, Lord. Truly, deeply tired.
Your servant who feels like a stranger, Elias
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elias, your honesty today is a profound form of worship. Please know that the distance you feel does not equate to God being absent; He is the God of the desert, the One who met Hagar and Ishmael in their deepest isolation, and He is holding your heart in this sterile room just as closely as He holds your children in Samar.
In Psalm 34:18, it says, 'The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.' He sees every tear you hide from your family during those video calls, and He values your sacrifice far more than any currency. Your identity is not defined by your job title or your distance from home, but by the fact that you are His beloved son.
Keep bringing this heaviness to Him, even when the words feel like dust. He is listening, He is present, and He is walking the floor with you in the quiet of the night. You are not a machine to Him; you are a father whose heart is seen and cherished. With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the anchor in the middle of the desert. Please comfort Elias in his loneliness, remind him that he is never alone, and bless his efforts to provide for his family. Grant him peace of mind during the long nights and soften his heart to feel Your presence even in the silence. We trust in Your timing and Your promise that You are near. In Jesus' name, Amen.
