Dear Lord, the neon lights of Tokyo are so bright, yet I have never felt more hidden in the shadows. I work fourteen hours a day as a caregiver, trying to provide for my parents back in Bicol, but the constant pressure to be their 'ticket out' of poverty is crushing the life out of me. Every time I send a remittance, I feel a piece of my own soul being sent away in a brown envelope, leaving me empty.
I miss the smell of toasted garlic and the sound of my Nanay humming in our kitchen. Here, I eat cold rice and talk to walls. Have You forgotten that I am a person, too? Why does it feel like my sacrifice is never enough? Is this all I am meant to be—a machine that turns hours into yen? I am drowning in a sea of people, yet I am completely alone, and I don't know how to keep pretending that I am okay when I am crumbling.
What do I do when my own dreams have become a burden I can no longer carry? I try to pray, but the words feel like dust in my mouth. Are You even listening to a daughter who is so far from home, or are You busy with prayers that sound more holy than mine? I am tired, Lord. I am so very tired.
A daughter who is losing herself, Elena
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elena, I hear the depth of your exhaustion and the ache in your heart for the home you left behind. It is not wrong to admit that you are breaking; you were never meant to carry the weight of your family’s future entirely on your own shoulders. Your worth is not defined by how much you provide or how much you sacrifice, but by the fact that you are His.
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' He is not asking for more productivity or stronger prayers; He is asking for your presence. You are seen in the quiet of your apartment just as clearly as you are seen in the bustle of the city. He is not a distant observer, but a Shepherd who understands your exile and carries your secret tears.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Dear Lord, please meet Elena in her loneliness in Tokyo. Wrap Your arms around her when the silence of her apartment becomes too loud. Remind her that she is loved for who she is, not for what she provides. Give her the strength to rest in Your presence and the peace that passes understanding. In Jesus' name, Amen.
