Dear God, the silence in this cramped room in Doha is heavier than the steel beams I carry all day. I came here with promises of a better life for my wife and kids back in Iloilo, but tonight, I feel like I am just fading away. The heat here is relentless, and it feels like it is burning away the memory of my children's laughter. Why is the sacrifice so high? Does my hard work here even reach You, or am I just a ghost toiling in a desert while my family grows up without me?
I miss the simple things—the smell of rain on the soil in our province, the sound of my Tatay’s voice, and the comfort of sitting at our table for a meal together. Here, I eat alone, often staring at my phone waiting for a video call that never seems to come at the right time because of the shift difference. Have You forgotten me in this foreign land? I feel like I am losing my soul to this job, and I am terrified that by the time I can finally go home, I will be a stranger to the people I love most.
What do I do when my heart feels like it has been emptied out? I try to pray, but the words feel like dust in my throat. I am tired, Lord. I am so tired of being brave for everyone else. Please, just tell me if this is worth it, or if I am merely trading the best years of my life for money that can never buy back the time I’ve lost.
Your servant who is breaking apart, Elias
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elias,
I hear the weight of your heavy heart, and I want you to know that your tears in that silent room are not unnoticed by the Father. You are not a ghost, and your sacrifice is seen by the One who knows exactly how many hairs are on your head and how many miles lay between you and your home. It is natural to feel this displacement, but please know that your value is not defined by your labor, but by your identity as a beloved child of the Creator.
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' He is not asking you to carry this heavy burden alone, nor does He expect you to be brave for everyone else while your own spirit is wilting. Bring your exhaustion and your questions to Him daily; He is big enough to hold your anger, your sorrow, and your deep longing. You are not alone in that desert, for His presence transcends borders and time zones.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Heavenly Father, thank You for being with Elias even in the loneliest hours in Doha. Lord, please wrap Your comforting arms around him and remind him that he is never forgotten. Sustain him with Your strength when his own energy fails, and grant him the peace that surpasses all understanding as he works for his family. Let him feel Your nearness in the silence, and lead him to trust in Your plan for his future and his homecoming. In Jesus' name, Amen.
