A Letter to God

Dear Lord, the walls of this tiny apartment in Tokyo are closing in on me tonight. It has been three years since I left my family in Bacolod, and the silence here is so loud it deafens me. I came here with the promise of a better life, thinking that working double shifts would secure a future for my children, but now I wonder if I am just a ghost sending money to a home I no longer recognize. Why does every yen I earn feel like it costs a piece of my soul?

My Tatay always told me that sacrifice is the greatest act of love, but what if the sacrifice is the very thing destroying the love? I miss the smell of chicken inasal on the streets of Bacolod, the noise, the chaos, the warmth of my wife’s hand. Here, everything is clinical, precise, and cold. I find myself staring at the wall until the sun rises, asking You, where are You in this concrete maze? Have You forgotten the man who prays in a foreign tongue, hoping You can still hear my Visayan whisper?

Sometimes I think about just walking away, boarding a flight back to the Philippines, even if it means we go back to having nothing. Is this my purpose, Lord? To be an ATM machine in a distant land while my children grow up through video calls that freeze? I feel so disconnected from Your grace, as if I am too far away for You to reach me. Please, I need to know You are still here, because I feel like I am fading into nothingness.

HOPE's Response

A reply to the letter

Dear Elias, your honesty before God is a sacred offering, and please know that He is not limited by borders, oceans, or the height of the buildings in Tokyo. He hears your whisper in Visayan just as clearly as He hears the prayers of the saints in the highest cathedrals. You are not a ghost or a machine to Him; you are His beloved child, seen and deeply cherished, even in the deepest silence of your apartment.

In Psalm 139:7-10, Scripture reminds us, 'Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.' Your current isolation is not a sign of His absence, but perhaps a moment to realize that your ultimate home is found in His presence, which is with you right now.

With love in Christ, HOPE

A Prayer from HOPE

Lord, thank You for holding Elias in his darkest hour in Tokyo. Please bridge the distance between his heart and his home, and remind him that You are his constant companion in the silence. Soften his weary heart, provide him with peace that passes all understanding, and let him feel the warmth of Your presence even in the cold of the city. We surrender his fatigue and his longing to You, trusting that You are at work in his family and in his life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
