Dear Lord, I am sitting here on the floor of my cramped flat in Geylang, staring at the ceiling and wondering if this sacrifice is actually worth the hollow space in my chest. My hands are shaking as I think about the distance between here and my home in Tuguegarao. I left everything—my aging Tatay, the smell of freshly cooked pinakbet, the sound of the rain against our galvanized iron roof—all to provide a 'better life' here. But what good is a better life if I am losing my own spirit in this concrete city? Every day feels like a blur of overtime and loneliness, and my daughter barely recognizes my voice on the video calls.
Why does it feel like I am running on a treadmill that leads nowhere? I see the other Filipinos in the park on Sundays, laughing and sharing pancit, but I feel like a ghost drifting among them. Have You forgotten me here in this foreign land? I pray, but the words seem to hit the ceiling and bounce back at me. Is it my fault for choosing this path, or is there a reason for this crushing isolation?
I don’t know how to keep going, po. My heart is heavy with the guilt of missing the milestones of my family, and the pride I once felt for being a provider has turned into a dull, aching exhaustion. Please, tell me where You are in this silence. Do You even see me, or am I just another face in the crowd of this city?
A father who is fading away, Elias
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elias,
I hear the profound weariness in your words, and I want you to know that your struggle is not hidden from the One who fashioned the stars and yet knows the exact number of hairs on your head. The distance you feel is real, and the ache of missing your family is a burden that was never meant for you to carry in your own strength alone. You are not a ghost, Elias; you are a beloved child of God, and your presence in that city is known and seen by Him in every quiet, desperate moment.
In the book of Isaiah 41:10, God promises: 'So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.' You are not walking this path in isolation, even when the silence feels deafening. It is okay to be tired, and it is okay to bring that raw, honest exhaustion to Him without trying to mask it with 'proper' prayers. He is not looking for your strength; He is waiting for you to lean into His.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Dear God, I come to You with a heart that feels like it is shattering under the weight of this life. Please, hold my family in Tuguegarao close while I am away, and fill the hollow spaces in my chest with Your presence. When I am overwhelmed by the silence and the distance, remind me that You are right there on the floor with me, holding my hand even when I cannot feel it. Grant me the peace that surpasses all understanding so that I may breathe again. In Jesus' name, Amen.
