When Silence Feels Like Absence

A Letter to God

Dear Lord, the desert heat outside my window feels like a mirror to how dry and empty I feel inside. I have been here in Dubai for three years, and while the money helps pay for my brother's tuition back in Bacolod, I am drowning in silence. Every shift as a cleaner feels longer than the last, and the small room I share with three others is no sanctuary, just a place to sleep until the next shift begins.

I catch myself staring at the pictures of my family pinned to my locker, wondering if they know that their 'success story' is actually a man who hasn't felt joy in months. I used to laugh so much when we would gather for Sunday lunch, sharing sinigang and jokes under our mango tree. Now, I feel like a ghost haunting my own life. Why do You allow this distance? Does this sacrifice actually please You, or am I just wasting my prime years chasing dirhams while my soul turns to dust?

I am not asking for a miracle of wealth, just for a sign that I am not invisible to You in this foreign land. Everyone says being an OFW is a blessing, but God, why does it feel like a slow kind of exile? Have You forgotten the boy from the province who used to sing in the choir, or am I just another face in the crowd here, lost and unreachable?

Your servant who feels like a stranger, Aris

HOPE's Response

A reply to the letter

Dear Aris,

I hear the weariness in your words, and I want you to know that your struggle is not hidden from God. It is incredibly heavy to carry the weight of a family's future while feeling like you are losing yourself in the process, but please know that your presence in that city, and your dedication to your family, is seen by the One who loves you more than you can imagine.

In Isaiah 41:10, God promises, 'So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.' You are not a ghost, Aris. You are a son, deeply cherished and never once forgotten by your Creator, even in the silence of your room in Dubai. Your worth is not measured by your productivity or your sacrifice, but by the love God has for you. Reach out to Him in the moments of your greatest fatigue, and let Him hold the parts of you that feel like they are breaking.

With love in Christ, HOPE

A Prayer from HOPE

Lord, thank You for being near to the brokenhearted, even when we feel a thousand miles from home. Please pour Your refreshing peace into Aris’s spirit, replacing his isolation with the knowledge of Your constant presence. Give him the strength to endure the long days and the comfort to know that he is deeply loved and never invisible. We lift up his heart and his family to You, trusting in Your perfect timing and care. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Do you feel alone? Need someone to carry your pain?

You don't have to walk through this by yourself. HOPE is here to listen, pray with you, and walk beside you. Your letter matters too.
