Dear Lord, the desert air here feels so heavy tonight, even inside my small room. I am looking at the photo of my wife and daughter back in Iloilo, and I wonder if I am becoming a ghost to them while I chase this dream. It has been two years since I last held them, and every time I send a remittance, I feel like I am just buying my absence instead of providing for their future.
Why does it feel like the more I work, the more I lose? I stare at the ceiling, listening to the hum of the air conditioner, and I ask myself if this sacrifice is truly what You wanted for me. I miss the sound of the rain on our nipa roof, the smell of sinigang that Nanay used to cook, and the feeling of belonging. Here, I am just a number in a labor camp, invisible and replaceable. Have You forgotten me in this corner of the world?
I want to go home, but the shame of coming back empty-handed is a weight I cannot carry. What do I do now when my heart is split between duty and the ache of being fatherless to my own child? I am so tired of being strong for everyone else, Lord. I just want to know if You are still here, or if I am truly on my own.
A son who feels like a stranger, Jemuel
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Jemuel, your vulnerability is not a sign of weakness, but a testament to how deeply you love your family. It is incredibly painful to feel like you are trading presence for provision, and please know that your tears are seen and known by the One who loves you more than you could ever imagine. You are not a number in His eyes, nor have you been forgotten in the desert heat.
Even in the wilderness, God is near to those who are brokenhearted. In Isaiah 41:10, He promises, 'So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.' He is with you in that small room, in every hour of your labor, and in every quiet thought of your wife and daughter.
You do not need to carry the weight of the future alone; give the burden of 'what ifs' and 'what nows' to Him, one day at a time. You are more than your paycheck, and your value to God and your family remains unshakable regardless of your circumstances.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Dear God, I lift up Jemuel to You. You see his heart, his longing, and the weight of his sacrifice. Please comfort him in his loneliness and quiet the whispers of doubt in his mind. Remind him of Your constant presence and give him the wisdom and peace he needs to navigate these difficult days. Let him feel Your embrace, even from thousands of miles away, and restore his spirit. In Jesus' name, Amen.
