Dear Lord, the snow outside my window in Oslo is beautiful, but it feels so cold against the fire of loneliness in my chest. I left my home in Iloilo four years ago thinking this sacrifice would provide everything, but today, I feel like I am losing myself in the silence. The paycheck arrives on time, and I send it back home to my siblings for their tuition, but there is no one here to share a meal with, no one to laugh with over a cup of barako coffee, and no one to witness the heavy weight of my days.
I find myself asking, was this really Your plan? I am working as a caregiver, giving my energy to people who are not my own blood, while my own youth is slipping away in this quiet, foreign city. I miss the noise of the jeepneys, the warmth of my mother’s voice, and the simple comfort of being known. Do You even see me here in this apartment that feels more like a gilded cage? Have You forgotten the boy who promised he would do anything to lift his family out of poverty?
Sometimes I want to pack my bags, forget the money, and just go back to the province. But then I think of my family’s expectations and the debts we still carry. I feel trapped between the duty to provide and the crushing desire to be loved and present. What do I do when I am physically fed but starving for connection? Why does the path to a better life feel so much like a slow death of the spirit?
Your servant who is fading, Elias
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elias, your honesty before the Lord is not a sign of weakness, but of a heart that is still seeking His truth in the middle of a weary season. It is profoundly difficult to carry the weight of an entire family's future on your shoulders while feeling entirely isolated in a land that feels alien. Please know that God is not absent in your silence; He is present in the very tears you shed in the dark of that Oslo apartment.
In Psalm 34:18, it is written, 'The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.' He sees your sacrifice, not just as a financial contribution to your family, but as a testament to your love and responsibility. He values you for who you are—His child—not just for what you provide for others. You do not have to carry this burden alone; invite Him into your loneliness each evening, not with religious words, but with the raw honesty you have shown today. He is the ultimate listener, and He is holding your spirit even when you feel like you are slipping away.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Dear God, thank You for seeing Elias in his quiet room, far from the people he loves. Please fill the void in his heart with Your presence, reminding him that he is never truly alone. Give him the strength to endure his daily tasks, the patience to wait for Your timing, and the comfort to know that his sacrifice is seen and honored by You. Restore his hope and give him rest for his weary soul. In Jesus' name, Amen.
