Dear Lord, the silence in this small flat in Deira is deafening tonight. I am staring at the ceiling, wondering if all these years of sacrifice were ever meant to be this lonely. It has been six years since I left my home in Antique, and while I have managed to send money for my Tatay’s maintenance meds and Nanay’s small store repairs, I feel like I am just a ghost living in a foreign land. Is this all there is to life? Just working, sleeping, and waiting for the next remittance cycle?
I catch myself crying while washing my uniform, remembering the smell of the sea back in our province. Sometimes I feel so disconnected from everyone, even when I call home. They say, 'Ang sipag mo naman, Junjun,' but they don't see the version of me that sits on the floor at 2 AM, trembling from the pressure of keeping this family afloat. Why do You allow me to feel so forgotten in this desert heat? Have You turned Your face away from me because I am too tired to even pray properly anymore?
I am scared, God. I am scared that I am losing my identity, that I am just a machine built to provide. If I stop, everything falls apart, but if I keep going, I feel like I am dying inside. What do I do now when my heart is this heavy and the horizon feels so empty? Your servant who is drowning in silence, Junjun
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Junjun,
I hear the weight of your exhaustion and the depth of your loneliness. It is not a failure to feel like you are breaking under the pressure of carrying so much, and you are certainly not forgotten. Even in the furthest reaches of the desert, you are seen by a God who counts every one of your tears and feels the ache of your displacement.
Scripture reminds us in Psalm 34:18 that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. You do not have to perform for Him or keep up a brave face; He welcomes your honesty and your silence. Bring your heavy heart to Him as it is, not as you think it should be. You are not just a provider; you are His beloved child, and your worth is found in His presence, not in your paycheck.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Lord, I lift up Junjun to You. Please wrap Your arms around him in that quiet room in Dubai. Remove the burden of his isolation and remind him that he is never alone. Give him rest for his weary soul and peace that passes all understanding. Renew his strength and help him find his identity in Your unfailing love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
