Dear Lord, the silence in this labor camp dormitory is louder than the construction noise outside. I am sitting on my bunk, staring at a picture of my children back in Negros, and I truly do not know if I can hold on for another contract. Everything I do is for them, yet I am missing their growth, their birthdays, and the sound of my wife’s voice when she tells me she is tired. Why does providing for my family require me to lose my place in it?
I feel like a ghost haunting my own life. I send my remittance money, I hear the 'thank you' on the video call, and then I return to this metallic bunk. Have You forgotten me in this desert? I prayed for a better life, but I didn't think it meant being a stranger to my own children. What do I do now, when the promise of a better future feels like a cage of my own making?
I miss the smell of rain on the soil in our backyard. I miss the simple joy of sharing a meal without counting the cost of every dirham. I am exhausted, Lord—not just in my body, but in my spirit. I am losing my purpose, and I am terrified that if I stay, I will become a hollow man who only knows how to work and nothing else.
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elias,
It is truly brave to admit that the heavy cost of sacrifice is leaving you feeling hollow. Please know that your longing for home and your children is not a sign of weakness; it is a testament to the depth of your love for them. Even in the desert, you are not abandoned, and the distance between you and your family does not measure the distance between you and God.
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' He is not asking you to carry this heavy load of guilt and exhaustion on your own strength. Your presence in the lives of your children is felt through your prayers and the integrity of your hard work, even when you cannot be there in person. God sees your tears in the dark of that dormitory, and He counts them as precious as the prayers you whisper for your family.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Heavenly Father, I bring Elias before You in his weariness. Surround him with Your presence in that distant land and quiet the storms of his heart. Remind him that he is never alone, that You are with him in the silence, and that his sacrifice is seen and honored. Grant him strength for today and a peace that surpasses all understanding for his family back in Negros. In Jesus' name, Amen.
