Dear Lord, I am sitting here in this small, sterile room, staring at the white walls of my employer's house. It has been three years since I last touched my mother's hand, and tonight, the silence in this desert city feels heavy enough to crush my lungs. I moved here to help my family in Iloilo, sending every riyal I earn back to pay for my brother's tuition and Tatay's maintenance meds. I try to be strong for them whenever we talk on video call, forcing a smile while my heart breaks into pieces.
But Lord, where are You in the middle of these late nights? I keep asking myself if this sacrifice is actually worth the cost of my soul. I feel like I am fading away, becoming just a worker, a body that cleans and cooks, forgetting who I was back home—the girl who loved the smell of rain on our galvanized roof and the taste of fresh la paz batchoy. Have You forgotten me in this place where the sun never seems to offer warmth, only burning heat?
I want to come home. I am tired of the cold politeness, the missed milestones, and the way my own reflection seems like a stranger now. Why does this path have to feel like a desert with no end? I have prayed, I have served, and I have endured, but tonight I just have questions. Are You even listening, or is my voice getting lost in the wind over these dunes?
Your daughter, who feels like she is disappearing, Elena
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elena, thank you for your honesty and for trusting us with the weight you are carrying. It is deeply painful to feel invisible while you are giving so much of yourself for those you love, and please know that your grief is not a lack of faith—it is a reflection of a heart that loves deeply and longs for home.
You asked where God is in your desert. Please remember the words in Isaiah 43:2: 'When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.' God is not in the comfort of your home in Iloilo; He is right there in that sterile room in Doha with you, catching every single tear you shed, even when you feel like you are fading.
Your worth is not defined by what you provide or how much you sacrifice; it is defined by the fact that you are His. You are allowed to be tired. You are allowed to be broken. You do not have to carry this burden in silence, and you do not have to be 'strong' for Him. He wants your raw heart exactly as it is tonight.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Lord, look upon Your daughter Elena. In the loneliness of the desert night, please wrap Your presence around her like a warm blanket. Remind her that she is seen, she is known, and she is cherished even when she feels forgotten. Give her the grace to endure this season, and grant her heart the peace that surpasses all understanding, knowing that her steps are ordered by You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Do you feel alone? Need someone to carry your pain?
You don't have to walk through this by yourself. HOPE is here to listen, pray with you, and walk beside you. Your letter matters too.
