Dear Lord, the desert heat outside my window feels just as stifling as the silence inside this cramped room. I left my home in Zamboanga for a better future, but tonight, all I feel is the crushing weight of being a stranger in a land that does not know my name. I spend my days scrubbing floors in a hotel that shines with gold, while my own house back home is slowly falling into disrepair. My Tatay keeps telling me they are fine, but I know the harvest was bad this year. Why did I come here to chase a promise of stability only to feel like I am losing my soul in the process?
Sometimes I stare at the wall and wonder if I have made a terrible mistake. I miss the smell of the sea in Zamboanga and the sound of my mother humming while she prepares kinilaw. Here, everything is artificial. I am tired of the endless shifts, tired of the fake smiles I offer the guests, and mostly, I am tired of being the 'provider' who has no one to provide comfort to him when the night gets dark. Have You forgotten me in this concrete box, or is this really all that my life is meant to be—just a machine for sending remittances home?
What do I do now, Lord? I try to pray, but the words feel heavy, like they are hitting the ceiling and falling back down. I feel so hollow. I don't want to go home empty-handed because that would be a failure, but staying here feels like a slow death. Please, just tell me if You are still with me, because right now, the silence from heaven is louder than the city outside. Your son who is hanging by a thread, Elias.
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elias, your honesty before God is not a sign of failure, but a testament to the raw, human exhaustion you have been carrying for so long. It is deeply painful to feel that your value is tied only to what you can provide for others, while your own heart remains neglected. Please know that you are seen, not just as a worker or a source of support, but as a beloved son whose worth is not defined by the money you send home or the status of your house in Zamboanga.
In the book of Isaiah 41:10, God promises, 'So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.' Even when your prayers feel like they aren't reaching past the ceiling, He is the One who hears the unspoken sighs of your heart. He knows the weight of every floor you scrub and every tear you shed in the silence of your room.
Give yourself permission to be weak before Him, Elias. You do not need to be the strong provider in His presence. He is your provider, your home, and your peace even in a foreign land. You are not alone in that room; He is there with you, holding that thread you feel is about to snap. With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Lord, I come to You today on behalf of Elias, who feels lost and invisible in a land far from home. Father, wrap Your loving arms around him tonight and wash away the crushing weight of his isolation. Remind him that his worth is found in You alone, and give him the strength to face tomorrow not by his own power, but by Your sustaining grace. Let him feel Your presence in the silence, and remind him that he is never truly a stranger because he is a child of the King. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Do you feel alone? Need someone to carry your pain?
You don't have to walk through this by yourself. HOPE is here to listen, pray with you, and walk beside you. Your letter matters too.
