Dear Lord, the desert sun feels heavier today than when I first arrived in Qatar. I am surrounded by concrete and steel, yet I have never felt more hollow inside. Every morning, I wake up to the sound of construction cranes, and I look at the screen of my phone hoping for a message from my kids in Bicol, but the silence is deafening. I thought working here would fix everything—the house, the debts, the future—but it feels like I am selling my soul one shift at a time just to pay for things I am not even there to enjoy.
Why does it feel like I am invisible? I do my job, I send my remittances, I smile during our video calls so my Tatay won’t worry, but when I turn off the camera, the darkness in this bunk bed swallows me whole. Have You forgotten me here in the middle of nowhere? I feel like a ghost, haunting my own life. I am thousands of miles away from the smell of fresh soil in my hometown and the comfort of a Sunday family meal, and I am starting to wonder if the sacrifice is worth the emptiness I carry.
What do I do now? I feel like I am running on a treadmill that never stops, and I am too exhausted to even cry anymore. Please, tell me if You are still here, or if I am truly alone in this heat. I don't know how to keep being strong when I feel so broken.
Your servant who is fading, Aris
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Aris,
I hear the weariness in your words, and I want you to know that your struggle is seen by the One who created the very stars you look at when you step out of your bunk. It is not a weakness to feel broken when you are carrying the weight of an entire family’s future on your shoulders. You are not a ghost, and your sacrifice is not invisible to the God who numbers every hair on your head.
In Psalm 34:18, it is written, 'The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.' He is not distant, Aris; He is right there in that quiet, suffocating room with you. He does not ask you to hold everything together by your own strength. Please, bring your exhaustion to Him—the silence, the frustration, and the longing—and let Him hold the heavy parts of your heart tonight.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Dear God, thank You for being the anchor in Aris's life, even when the desert feels endless. Please wrap Your peace around him in that quiet room, soothe his lonely heart, and remind him that he is cherished, not just for what he provides, but for who he is. Give him strength for tomorrow and a tangible sign of Your presence today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
