Dear God, the silence in this Tokyo apartment is becoming louder than the sound of my own thoughts. I came here to give my family a better life, but I am losing the very life I was trying to save. I work long hours in this factory, and by the time I reach my tiny room, my heart just breaks. I miss the noise of my home in Iloilo—the sound of my children laughing, the smell of my wife’s cooking, and even the simple sight of the neighbors greeting each other. Why did You send me so far away? Is this sacrifice really worth the distance growing between my children and me?
I find myself staring at the wall, asking if You are even in this foreign land. I try to pray, but the words feel heavy, like stones in my throat. I feel like a ghost, working for people I don't really know, for a country that doesn't feel like mine. My children barely talk to me on video calls anymore, and I fear that when I finally return with my balikbayan box full of gifts, they will look at me like a stranger. Have You forgotten me, Lord? Do You see the tears I hide every time the train doors close on me?
I don't know how to keep going. I feel like I am just drifting in this sea of neon lights and concrete, disconnected from everything that once defined who I was. I don't want to be a provider anymore if the cost is the soul of my family. What do I do now? How do I find You in this loneliness that feels like it’s swallowing me whole?
A father who is drifting away, Elias
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Elias, your heart is being heard, even in the stillness of that room in Tokyo. The pain of being a provider often carries a hidden weight that others cannot see—the grief of missing moments that can never be recovered. Please know that your longing for home and your children is a testament to the love you carry, a love that reflects the Father’s own heart for His children.
In Matthew 28:20, God promises, 'And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.' You are not adrift, and you are not forgotten. The distance between you and your family does not break the spiritual bond that God holds together. Even when you feel like a ghost, know that your presence in your family's life is being felt through your sacrifice and your prayers, even if it isn't always reflected in the words they speak back to you.
Take heart in knowing that God is not just in Iloilo; He is right there in the quiet of your apartment in Japan. He catches every tear that falls while you are away. You do not have to carry the future alone; give the weight of the years and the distance to Him, one day at a time.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Dear God, I lift up Elias to You in his loneliness and exhaustion. I pray that You would be a tangible comfort in his small room, reminding him that he is seen and valued. Grant him peace when the silence is too loud, and bridge the emotional distance between him and his family back home. Give him the strength to keep going, trusting that his labor of love is not in vain. May Your presence be his companion in the city of Tokyo, reminding him that he is never alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Do you feel alone? Need someone to carry your pain?
