Dear Lord, the city lights outside my window are so bright, but everything inside this shared flat feels like it is fading into gray. I have been here for two years, and every night, the silence of this room is louder than the construction noise outside. I miss the sound of my Tatay coughing in the morning and the smell of Nanay’s tinola. My friends back in Iloilo tell me I am lucky to have this job, but do You see the price I am paying?
Why does it feel like I am invisible here? I work fourteen hours a day, I send every dirham back home, but I feel like I am losing my soul in this desert. Have You forgotten me in this place where the air is always dusty and the faces change every month? I try to pray, but the words get stuck in my throat. I am tired of being strong for everyone.
What do I do now when the homesickness starts to feel like a physical weight on my chest? Is this sacrifice really worth the hollow ache that never leaves my heart? I feel so small and so far away from You. Please, tell me why You brought me to this foreign land if I am just going to drift further and further away from myself.
A son who is slowly breaking, Junjun
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Junjun,
I hear the weariness in your voice, and I want you to know that your tears in that small room are not hidden from the One who created the stars above those Dubai skyscrapers. Your sacrifice is seen, and your exhaustion is understood. You are not invisible; you are held by a grace that transcends borders and languages, even when the desert feels infinite and empty.
In Psalm 34:18, it is written: 'The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.' He is not a God who only stays in your home province of Iloilo; He is present in the silence of your room, in the heat of your workday, and in every single tear that falls. You do not have to be 'strong' for Him—you only need to be honest, just as you have been in this letter.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Lord, thank You for being the God who travels with us across oceans and deserts. When the world feels too big and my heart feels too small, remind me that I am Your child. Carry my exhaustion, quiet my anxious thoughts, and help me to feel Your presence in the middle of this isolation. Please grant me the peace that passes understanding and the strength to endure another day, knowing I am never truly alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
