Dear Lord, the silence in this Tokyo apartment is louder than the streets outside. I am surrounded by neon lights, yet I have never felt more invisible in my entire life. I came here to give my children a better future in Pampanga, hoping the yen I send back would build them a home, but now I realize I am building a house for people who are becoming strangers to me. My youngest calls me 'Tito' during our video calls, and every time she says it, a part of my heart just shrivels up. Why did I trade my presence for their provision?
Lord, I work twelve-hour shifts in this factory, repeating the same motions until my hands go numb, just to pay off the debt we took to get me here. I am exhausted, po. I keep waiting for a sign that this sacrifice is enough, that I haven't lost my soul in the process of chasing this dream. When will this cycle end? Have You forgotten the man who prays in his cramped room every night, staring at a picture of his wife that is starting to fade?
I feel like I am drifting further away from everything that makes me Filipino, everything that makes me whole. My faith feels like a flickering candle in a storm. Are You still walking beside me in this cold, neon-lit city, or am I truly on my own? Please, tell me how to keep going when I have absolutely nothing left to give.
Your broken servant, Aris
HOPE's Response
A reply to the letter
Dear Aris,
Your pain is heard in the quiet corners of your room, and your exhaustion is seen by the One who never sleeps. It is a heavy burden to carry the weight of provision while feeling the ache of distance, and it is honest to admit that the cost of this sacrifice feels higher than you ever imagined. Please know that your identity is not defined by your paycheck or your distance from home; you are a child of God, deeply cherished and never invisible to Him.
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' He is not asking you to be strong on your own; He is inviting you to lay that heavy armor down at His feet. Your children may not see your daily labor, but God sees the love behind every cent you send and every tear you shed. He is the bridge between your heart and theirs, even when the miles feel impossible to span.
With love in Christ, HOPE
A Prayer from HOPE
Lord, I surrender my exhaustion and my deep loneliness to You. Please fill the empty spaces in my heart and remind me that I am never truly alone in this foreign land. Give me the strength to endure today and the wisdom to trust that You are holding my family together even while I am away. Grant me peace that surpasses all understanding in the midst of this silence. In Jesus' name, Amen.
