"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

Understanding the Verse

This powerful command was given to the Israelites as they stood on the precipice of a new, uncertain chapter, preparing to enter the Promised Land. Moses reminded them that their strength did not come from their own military might or numbers, but from the unwavering presence of the Almighty. It serves as a profound assurance that we do not have to face our battles alone. In our modern lives, we often feel overwhelmed by financial anxieties, family burdens, or the fear of the unknown. This verse invites us to shift our focus from the size of our giants to the greatness of our God. Because He walks beside us, we can replace our terror with a steady, quiet courage, knowing that our security is anchored in His promise to never abandon us.

A Story to Remember

Mang Lito was a fisherman in a small coastal town in Samar who feared the coming of the habagat, the monsoon season. His wooden banca was old, and he worried that when the dark clouds gathered and the waves turned violent, he would be swallowed by the sea. Each night, he would look at the horizon, his heart heavy with the dread of being lost in the vast, churning waters during the storm.

One evening, his son, Jun-jun, climbed into the boat with him, holding a small, flickering lamp. Mang Lito told him to go back to the shore, fearing the dangers of the deep. But Jun-jun held on tight to the edge of the bench. 'Tatay, even if the waves are high, I am not afraid because I am here with you, and you know these waters better than anyone,' the boy said. 'If we are together, the boat will not feel so small.'

Mang Lito realized then that his fear had blinded him to a greater truth. He had been focusing on the storm instead of the One who holds the seas in the palm of His hand. He bowed his head and prayed, inviting the Lord into his boat. As he steered through the crashing waves, the presence of God felt as real as his son sitting beside him. He steered with a steady hand, no longer terrified, knowing that the Creator of the wind and rain was navigating the journey right along with him.
